Last week, I wrote about the Anthropic Principle, which prompted mainstream astronomers to postulate the existence of zillions of other universes to avoid the alternative inference: that life is as primary as physics-that the purpose of our universe is to be a home for life. There is another realm where physicists have postulated the existence of (even more unthinkably many) extra universes in order to save their 19th Century.
