On August 5, the warehouse containing powder for artillery shells caught fire and explosions in the territory of a military unit in the Achinsk district, Russia’s Krasnoyarsk Krai (Region). Communities within a 20-kilometer area (nearly 11,000 people) around the emergency are being evacuated.
According to reports, 4 military servicemen and 4 civilians have been injured. There were also reports about at least one fatality, but the Defense Ministry denied them.
Rusal, the world’s largest aluminum producer outside China, suspended operations at its aluminum plant in the Achinsk district and evacuated all but essential staff as a safety precaution. The plant is located about 30 kilometers from the military base where the explosions occurred.
The reason behind the August 5 incident remains unclear. In general, security measures and discipline on such objects in Russia are in general very strict.
It should be noted that western Siberia, in particular the Novosibirsk Oblast and Krasnoyarsk Krai have recently been flooded with newcomers from Ukraine that fleeing the poor economic and social situation in their home country. A notable number of people of Central Asian descent is also there. In this conditions, it is not unthinkable that this incident may have been manmade.
Another interesting fact is that the explosions in Krasnoyarsk Krai happened followed a recent round of protests in Moscow. These protests gathered a very low number of protesters for the 15 million-populated city, but gained a very loud coverage in mainstream media. Another incident of this kind was a recent hysteria regarding “catastrophe” with forest fires in Siberia – when observers checked the numbers, it appeared that the situation is within the ordinary limits and such situations appear on a yearly basis.
