Hippocrates had some sage advice for his fellow physicians. “When you come to a patient's house, you should ask him what sort of pain he has, what caused it, how many days he has been ill, whether the bowels are working and what sort of food he eats.” Reflecting on this, Bernardo Ramazzini, writing in the latter part of the 17th century, remarked: “I may venture to add one more question: What occupation does he follow?” That question would characterize Ramazzini’s career and would land him in history books as “the father of occupational medicine.”
