And it's easy to see why a wider audience might be interested, with The Vault featuring a host of recognizable stars of the big screen. The plot begins with a salvage merchant recovering treasure from a 17th century shipwreck, only for the Spanish government to seize his loot. Desperate, the protagonist assembles a team of amateurs to liberate the gold, while the country is distracted by the talents of Andrés Iniesta and Xavi.
In Game of Thrones, Liam Cunningham's Ser Davos Seaworth was a smuggler extraordinaire who knew the seas like the back of his mutilated hand. This may be how Cunningham landed the gig of playing The Vault's sea-faring protagonist, Walter Moreland - a hard-working salvage specialist whose quarry is taken away by the Spanish authorities. Walter is the man responsible for assembling the film's main heist crew.
Among the eclectic figures Walter recruits to break his sunken treasure out of government lockup is Thom, played by Freddie Highmore. The actor is perhaps best known for playing Charlie Bucket in Tim Burton's 2005 Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, but has also starred in Finding Neverland, Bates Motel and The Good Doctor. Thom is the final missing piece to Walter's crew - a highly intelligent engineer hired for his understanding of how to navigate the security measures inside The Vault's titular safe.
Walter doesn't just pick strangers to join him on The Vault's mission; he also takes long-serving salvage partner James along for the ride. Previously a diver who helped Walter recover the treasure in the first place, James now finds himself breaking into a top-of-the-line Spanish vault. Sam Riley portrayed Diaval in Disney's two Maleficent movies, as well as Joy Division's Ian Curtis in Control.
Famke Janssen will be most familiar to Netflix subscribers for playing Jean Grey in Fox's original trilogy of X-Men movies during the 2000s, although James Bond fans might know her better as Xenia Onatopp in Goldeneye. Janssen was also the unfortunate ex-wife of Liam Neeson throughout the Taken trilogy. In The Vault, Janssen plays Margaret, a representative of the British government and a personal pal of Walter's. Her intentions remain predictably enigmatic.
Lorraine is another member of Walter's main team for the Spanish heist. She's selected for her expertise as a pickpocket, though relieving an industrial vault of its contents proves much harder than the coats of unsuspecting tourists. Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey will be a name more familiar to European audiences, but she did land a breakout role as Syrena the mermaid in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and featured in Guy Ritchie flop King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
Axel Stein as Klaus - Every team needs a hacker. Axel Stein is best known for his German film & TV roles, as well as his comedy career.
Luis Tosar as Simon - Simon is a man who "acquires" things. Whatever the would-be safe-cracker might need, Luis Tosar's character can get. Tosar is an award-winning Spanish actor.
José Coronado as Gustavo - Gustavo is responsible for chasing Walter down and stopping the heist. His illustrious career in Spain includes a guest role in the country's version of Cheers.
Emilio Gutiérrez Caba as Bank Chairman - Another person willing Walter to fail. Caba has been active in Spain since the 1960s.
Daniel Holguín as Muñoz - Holguín has enjoyed minor roles alongside Cameron Diaz in The Counselor and Benicio del Toro in Che.
James Giblin as Thom's Father - Freddie Highmore's on-screen dad previously featured in Paradise Hills and The Vineyard before his involvement in The Vault.
