Supernatural: Castiel's 8 Best Outfits | Screen Rant
Misha Collins’ Castiel is the breakout character of Supernatural, debuting in the first episode of the fourth season, then sticking around for the remainder of the series. Unlike Sam and Dean, Castiel didn’t get to wear an assortment of disguises and was generally seen the same way throughout his time on the show.
Still, Castiel did wear other get-ups on occasion, based on necessity or when the character was in a different headspace. Now that the series has come to a close after its 15-year run, it’s worth looking at the times when Castiel pulled off all of the outfits that went with his multiple personas.
Although Castiel is one of the Supernatural characters who appears most in the series, he was largely absent from the seventh season when he disappeared after the Leviathans consumed his body. Castiel turned out to be resurrected, believing he was a healer named Emmanuel.
At this time, Castiel wore a blue zip sweater to give off the appearance of an unassuming man, which the outfit more than accomplished since Dean even commented on it. Castiel may have donned the sweater as his primary costume if he’d remained retired, as it gave off an easygoing and relaxed vibe.
In the universe where Supernatural was a TV show, Castiel’s identity was actor Misha Collins, who was the complete opposite in personality. Misha wore flashy clothes to establish his Hollywood mentality and the last outfit he wore was a blue open sweater.
Although he got killed wearing those clothes, Misha at least went out looking good as the sweater captured his chill actor attitude. He combined it with a t-shirt with a similar color and a lighter shade that made for an all-blue ensemble that Castiel was never seen again wearing in the series.
Being homeless never looked as good as when Castiel pulled it off, wearing a three-layered outfit that was more stylish than it probably needed to be. It was when Castiel had become human and lost his powers, requiring him to wear all the clothes he had on himself because he had no place to live.
The collar and lapel were enlarged in an exaggerated way, but that allowed the jacket to pop right in the eyes to make Castiel stand out. The shirt inside was of a lighter shade than the jacket, contrasting in appearance so that Castiel became a can’t-miss in a crowd.
Castiel went undercover as Dr. Noval during a fourteenth season episode and donned a doctor’s coat to make his identity seem legitimate. It ended up going very well with the suit he generally wore, as the white coat was in good contrast with his black tie.
Castiel generally had a habit of letting his shoulders loose, which somehow fit in with the doctor’s coat since he looked like a man with a sensitive disposition. His trenchcoat is his most well-known apparel but it was good to see Castiel seem a little different for once.
Castiel started feeling the weight of the many deaths seen in Supernatural, with most being the angels that he was responsible for falling to Earth. After regaining his grace, Castiel stopped wearing a tie to avoid appearing businesslike and more inviting, wearing a new, thicker trenchcoat with it.
To Castiel’s credit, he did appear less intimidating without a tie and a cleaner-looking trenchcoat. It was the kind of change he needed in his life at the time to greet people in a friendlier manner and dispense of the hierarchical attitude he had carried for a number of years before then.
It was rare to see Castiel without a trenchcoat and many fans might not have noticed that he always wore a suit underneath. It was the default appearance of angels and Castiel was the only one who had changed things up a bit by adding another layer.
However, he still looked fetching in a normal suit because it accentuated his frame in a way the trenchcoat didn’t allow. It’s interesting how different Castiel appears in a mostly black-colored outfit, which the series seemed to favor in promotional materials since Castiel would be seen this way in posters and promos.
He might not be the Supernatural character with the best fighting ability, but Castiel at least got around to doing battle when the time called. It wasn’t the same with the Castiel from an alternate future that Dean visited, who had become human and stopped looking like an angel altogether.
This version of Castiel wore a casual shirt that seemed to be the last remnant of the suit he’d once worn. For some reason, the casual style did wonders for Castiel’s appearance, as he had a mellow look that went along with his new persona of wanting peace rather than battle.
There’s no question that Castiel’s standard appearance is his most iconic, with Supernatural fans loving his trenchcoat and suit that instantly defined Castiel’s character. The trenchcoat, in particular, enables him to seem different compared to other angels and injects a great deal of personality into Castiel.
This outfit is the favorite of Supernatural cosplayers due to how distinct it looks. It played into storylines as well, as Castiel would be handed back his trenchcoat during times when he needed to return to fight or remember who he was. Out of all costumes in the series, Castiel’s primary one might be the most recognizable.
