Not enough sun

One of the biggest mistakes gardeners make is putting plants in shady areas.

If you’re not sure where gets the most light in your garden, the pro suggests going outside at different points throughout the day to check.

Remember that this will change with the seasons as well.

Planting too far from a water source

If your garden is on the larger side, try to keep your plants close to your house.

If you have an outdoor tap or hose, check to see how far it reaches.

Green fingered Kevin says that if you have to carry heavy jugs of water far it’s easy to get lazy and not do it, which will result in dead plants.

Not mulching

“You must respect the power of the mulch,” the pro jokes.

There are loads of mulching options out there, the pro favours shredded straw but you could also use fallen leaves or grass.

Mulching protects the surface of the soil and reduces the amount you need to water you plants, so it’s important to get it right.

Not preparing soil

If you’re planting in the ground, the gardening whizz suggests doing a soil test so you know what you’re working with.

“If you’re planting in a new space, you don’t know what happened in the decades before you lived there,” Kevin shared.

Knowing what type of soil you have will directly affect how your plants grow.

Planting thing you don’t like to eat

It can be tempting for beginners to want to grow whatever is easiest, but you shouldn’t actually do this.

Instead opt for things you enjoy so that you’ll feel more motivated to pour time and attention into growing it.

Planting too close together

It’s common to plant seeds too close together, but another common mistake is forgetting to thin them out after they’ve germinated.

Plants will be restricted and wont grow as big if they don’t have room, especially if you’re growing vegetables.

Planting at the wrong time of year

Even if you live in a hotter climate, you still have to stick to the correct times to plant.

The gardening god says that even if your plants don’t die, they certainly wont thrive.

“If you respect the season you’ll have a lot more success,” Kevin adds.
