“They’ll regret it” – Tottenham told they’re sleepwalking into massive transfer blunder
Tottenham have been urged not to let defender Joe Rodon leave the club on a permanent basis this summer as they will live to regret it one day if they do.
Rodon’s future with Spurs is in doubt as he struggles to get a game. Boss Antonio Conte continues to overlook him and the 24-year-old is growing frustrated. A move away looks likely in the summer but Spurs have been told they need to be careful.
Football writer Alasdair Gold was speaking on his YouTube channel and sounded a warning. He fears that Tottenham could let Rodon go permanently and believes that would be a mistake.
Instead he hopes Spurs just opt to send Rodon out on loan for a season. That would give Rodon the regular first-team football he craves. It would also mean he could still have a future with Spurs.
Rave reviews for Rodon
Gold is also frustrated Conte talks up Rodon but does not give him a chance with Spurs. The defender has made 13 appearances since an £11m move from Swansea. But none of them have come under the Italian tactician.
“Antonio Conte has just apparently given a rave review of Rodon’s performance against Austria for Wales,” Gold said in his Tottenham Q&A.
“And you just kind of think, is his chance gone now, though? This is the thing, with all these games now, pretty much always one a week now, I think we’ll get to the summer and I think Joe Rodon will move on to another club.
“I just hope for Tottenham’s sake they make it a loan, because I think he’s gonna go somewhere and do very well. And if they let him go permanently, I do think they’ll live to regret it, I do.”
It does seem unlikely Rodon will get a sniff this season as the stakes are very high. Spurs are pushing for a place in the top four and every game is huge.
Tottenham chasing fourth
Arch rivals Arsenal occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot. Spurs are three points behind in fifth and have played a game more.
Conte looks sure to stick with his current crop. Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies are all ahead of him in the pecking order.
There is a good chance that Rodon’s agents will already be putting his name out there. And there is sure to be no shortage of interest in the defender. Tottenham will have a decision to make and according to Gold selling him will be a bad one.
