Aquaman: Andromeda Makes Arthur Curry the Horror Icon He Should Be
As DC Comics continues to hype up the already eagerly anticipated Aquaman: Andromeda, the company has released a new trailer for their latest DC Black Label book that also offers new info on the limited series. Aquaman: Andromeda promises to be submerged fully in the horror genre, as is sometimes the case for the non-canon, stand-alone stories released under DC's much darker Black Label imprint.
What audiences previously knew about Aquaman: Andromeda is that a submarine filled with soldiers, scientists, and survivalists find themselves investigating some sort of mystery at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. As it turns out, Black Manta is seeking to discover that same mystery, putting the submarine in his sights. As Aquaman finds himself in Black Manta's own crosshairs, everyone's lives may be in danger whilst pursuing this unspoken mystery within the dark depths of the abyss. Unfortunately, all appearances suggest Aquaman's latest adventure will be straight up eldritch.
Aquaman: Andromeda will be written by Ram V. with artwork from Christian Ward. In the aforementioned trailer (which can be watched in full on DC's YouTube channel), Ram V. finally identifies that mystery as an "unidentified object." In the same breath, it's also revealed that the story will essentially be positioned as the first mission where Aquaman will be discovered in this world. Among other things, it's been revealed that the first issue will release on June 7, 2022, but above all else, the trailer highlights how Aquaman has always been the perfect horror candidate for being DC's next horror icon.
At face value, Aquaman and horror may seem like a strange combination, but keeping in mind all of the potential terrors that lie await beneath the sea, it's surprising to think that Aquaman hasn't gotten a horror series sooner. As the images previewed during the trailer go to showcase, the vast emptiness of the ocean occupied by Atlantis' greatest seaman evokes a chilling atmosphere. The concept is bound to be utilized to its full potential in the hands of a creative team who have previously worked on horror-esque characters like Swamp Thing and Venom.
It's also worth mentioning that Warner Bros. was previously working on a horror spin-off movie about Aquaman called The Trench that ended up being scrapped last year. That prolonged Aquaman's destiny of being fully realized as a horror icon, but in June, that destiny finally gets fulfilled in comic book form.
Aquaman: Andromeda #1 by Ram V. and Christian Ward will hit local comic book stores and digital stores on June 7, 2022.
