José Quintana, who has yet to pitch for the Mets this season, took a step in the right direction with his recovery from rib surgery. The 34-year-old received positive news on his CT scan Friday, and will start mound work for the first time tomorrow. “It’s time to get ready for baseball,” Quintana said.
He underwent bone-graft surgery in the middle of March, which was expected to keep him off the mound until July. It seems as if that timetable is still right, given the steps the veteran needs to complete in order to return to the big leagues.
Quintana signed a two-year, $26 million deal with the Mets in the offseason. He pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022, owning a 6-7 record with a 2.93 ERA in 165 2/3 innings.
The health and availability of the Mets rotation is beginning to look much brighter, as Carlos Carrasco is being activated off the injured list for Friday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians. Once Quintana is able to debut for the team, Buck Showalter should have the best version of his rotation.
