Law enforcement agreement between Jeanerette city police and city marshal ends
IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) --- Recent officer hires in the Jeanerette Police Department have brought an end to the intergovernmental law enforcement agreement between the marshal's office and city police.
"When the marshal's office to the contract with us, we had maybe two or three at the time. We're up to six right now. That's including myself," Jeanerette Police Chief Dusty Vallot said.
In February, the Jeanerette Board of Alderman approved an agreement between both agencies to temporarily work together following a staffing shortage; it would be renewed on a month-to-month basis.
"Our main objective was to come up there and fill the gaps for the chief as far as manpower," Marshal Fernest Martin said.
At the recent alderman meeting, Vallot informed Martin the department no longer needs the assistance. Both the chief and the marshal said they were happy to be able to serve the community and look forward to any additional work in the future.
"Me and the marshal was in contact before the meeting and like you, it once again I told them we was up to staff," Vallot said.
"We always come together and make sure we can make this place a better place than what it was yesterday, the night before," Martin said.
Vallot said they are still in the process of looking to hire some officers if anyone is interested in protecting and serving the community.
