Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott Just Hard-Launched in the Most Hard-Launch Way

We awoke this morning to two very unexpected bits of breaking news: The first being that Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott are expecting a baby! And, the second being that, apparently, they have been in a relationship? Hello? Was anyone going to tell me? My inner Marnie is rolling in the grave.

This will be Plaza and Abbott’s first child together, which comes as a surprise, considering there was little to no public knowledge that they were even a couple to begin with. They previously co-starred in the 2023 off-Broadway revival of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea and in the 2020 film Black Bear. In both, their characters were romantically entangled, but there was nary a rumor of an offscreen romance. Upon doing further research (Googling “Aubrey Plaza Christopher Abbott dating????”), I came across an item published by DeuxMoi in July, in which an onlooker claimed the Abbott and Plaza were indeed more than just coworkers, reporting them together at the Chatham Berry Farm upstate, where Plaza was “rubbing his back,” and “sitting very close at a picnic table.” Regardless, congratulations are in order!

“It was a beautiful surprise after an emotional year,” Plaza’s reps told People. “They feel very blessed.”

In January 2025, Plaza’s partner of 14 years, Jeff Baena, died by suicide. It was later revealed that the couple had separated four months before his death in September 2024. Last year, Plaza discussed her ongoing grief with Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast.

“At all times there’s like a giant ocean of awfulness, that’s like right there, and I can see it,” Plaza said. “Sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just like be in it. Then sometimes I just look at it, and sometimes I try to get away from it. But, it’s always there.”’

At the end of the day, I’m always in Plaza’s corner, so it makes me happy to see her happy after such a loss. In a 2023 interview with The New York Times for Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Plaza said of Abbott, “He cares, but he also doesn’t care; it’s the best recipe for me for a scene partner.”

Abbott responded, “We’re both unafraid to be ugly and weird and strange,” and that’s all I could ever ask for.
