Better data could be key to improving the US criminal justice system

How many people die in our criminal justice system each year?

It turns out it is hard to tell, and it depends who you ask.

Following the deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray and many others at the hands of the police, this lack of information has emerged as one of the most pressing issues in criminal justice reform.

Reading media reports of these deaths would lead one to suspect that dying in police custody is a widespread problem. Читать дальше...

Starbucks suit dumped; Kindle Reading Fund; YouTube’s real store

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A lawsuit that accused Starbucks of misrepresenting the sizes of its cold drinks was dismissed with a written tongue-lashing by U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson. Plaintiff Alexander Forouzesh claimed Starbucks deceptively listed the sizes of drinks as the total liquid volume of the drink and ice, not just the beverage itself, but Anderson said a “reasonable consumer” would know that the stated ounces for an iced drink contain, well, ice. If children have figured out that including ice in a cold... Читать дальше...

U.S. Housing Market On Solid Ground [VIDEO]

International Business Times

WASHINGTON — U.S. home resales fell more than expected in July after four straight months of strong gains, as a lack of inventory limited choice for buyers, but further price rises suggested the housing market remained on solid ground. The slump in sales reported by the National Association of Realtors on Wednesday is likely to be temporary, given that a tightening labor market is steadily pushing up wages and mortgage rates are near historically low levels.

‘Ixcanul’: a volcanic look at Mayan life

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

“Ixcanul,” which takes place near a volcano in Guatemala, is a lyrical film that plays like a well-done National Geographic special — until it unexpectedly turns lava hot. Throughout, “Ixcanul” impresses with its attention to detail, chronicling the daily routines of a Mayan coffee-farming village, an isolated place where cars, cell phones and televisions appear to be nonexistent. The ashen volcano hovers ominously, a symbol of pent-up feelings and a smoldering conflict between modernity and tradition. Читать дальше...
