Leslie Ash talks about her 33-year marriage to Lee Chapman, getting grumpier and funny women
What is your greatest fear?
Death. Getting old isn’t easy. I also get FOMO.
Which word do you overuse?
“Yes”. I’m always agreeing to everything. My kids Max and Joe are 27 and 30, but even at that age I still can’t say no to them!
What is your worst habit?
Before I go to bed, everything has to be perfect – clean surfaces, plumped cushions – so when I wake up it’s tidy. Sometimes it can take me a while and it drives me mad!
Who or what is the love of your life?
My husband Lee. We’ve been married for 33 years. We’re in each other’s company
all the time and if you can do that with someone, they must be the love of your life.
Who would you invite to a dinner party?
Funny women – Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sharon Horgan and Roisin Conaty. I don’t know them, but I really love their writing.
How often do you have sex?
I couldn’t possibly say!
What is your experience of grief?
There’s nothing so hurtful as losing your parents. I was very close to my mother and she died suddenly at 68 in 2000. I don’t think I’ve ever got over that. My dad died in 2004. It’s horrible.
Who makes you laugh the most?
My sons have an ability to really tap into my silly sense of humour, and when they make me laugh I can’t stop.
What makes you angry?
People who make me feel invisible or don’t say thank you, especially when I’m driving. The older I get, the grumpier I’m becoming.
Leave or Remain?
I was Remain and now I’m Leave. We voted to leave – if that’s what people wanted to do, we should honour that.
What does being in love feel like?
Being home and feeling safe.
Who was your first kiss?
Neil Leatherdale, literally the boy next door. I was about five. He wouldn’t let me leave his wigwam unless I kissed him.
What is your biggest regret?
Not being more confident early in my career. It made me stand back and not take as many opportunities as I should have done. I’ve gained a lot of strength with age.
What is top of your bucket list?
To produce a film. I’ve just started a production company making trailers for films.
What song would you like played at your funeral?
Smile by Natalie Cole. I love the lyrics and I’d want everyone to be bawling.

Who would you like to apologise to?
My kids, for when I’d watch them play football at school wearing a cap and sunglasses. They’d say I was trying to look like a celebrity and make me sit in the car.
Who would you consign to Room 101?
Frank Skinner. Years ago he invited me on his show with David Baddiel. They had me walk on to a football chant that wasn’t particularly nice to me. It was a cheap trick.
What are your best and worst qualities?
I’m a loyal friend, but I like to get my own way and I’ll put up a fight.
