How to clean up your home without cleaning out the bank — plus get two FREE Madame Tussauds tickets
CLEANING up doesn’t need to clean you out – and today I’ll tell you exactly how.
According to one survey, we shell out up to £144 a year on stuff to spruce up our homes. But there are some cheap and unique alternatives.
Find out how you can save on cleaning products and still get a sparkling finish without spending too much[/caption]
Here’s my guide to a sparkling finish without the spend . . .
Conker the dirt: Instead of using washing powder, try cleaning your clothes with conkers, suggests Sun reader Lucie Mann, who does just that.
Chop and dry the conkers, then add 40g of them to a jug filled with 500ml of boiling water. Leave for 30 minutes for a creamy thick liquid.
Sieve the conkers into another jug, resoak for another hour, then repeat this for a third time.
Use the liquid from the first soak for your dirtiest washing, the second batch for normal washing and the third lot for items that need a light wash.
What a beauty: I’m a big fan of multi-purpose cleaner Zoflora.
Make-up bags can harbour all sorts of bacteria, but you can quickly remedy it by regularly wiping it out with a cloth soaked in diluted Zoflora. You can also do the same for make-up packaging.
Pick up the Sparkling Spruce scent at Poundland for a lovely wintry scent.
Squeaky clean: Surface cleaner can be expensive, especially when you can make your own solution.
Get an empty washing-up liquid bottle, add ten per cent bleach and ten per cent washing-up liquid, then fill the rest of the bottle with water — and you’ll have a home-made surface cleaner for a fraction of the price.
Check online before using it on certain surfaces — you don’t want to damage anything and end up with a costly bill to replace it.
Scent-sational: Febreze is great, isn’t it? But at £3 a bottle in Tesco, why splash the cash when you can make multiple bottles on the cheap?
All you need is some fabric softener and a spray bottle. Simply put ten per cent fabric softener into the bottle and fill it up with water and you have your own sweet-smelling version of Febreze.
