‘One Battle After Another’ Wins Best Feature at 2025 Gotham Awards (Complete Winners List)

0

Going into the 35th Gotham Awards, which took place in Manhattan on Monday night, “One Battle After Another” led all nominees with a record-setting six nods. It ended the night with just one win, but it was a big one: the last award of the show, Best Feature. On stage, a surprised looking writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson seemed to allude to his film’s five previous losses and said he was not expecting to be making an acceptance speech.

The evening truly belonged to Jafar Panahi, whose “It Was Just an Accident” went three for three, taking home the ceremony’s first award, Best Original Screenplay, before picking up Best International Feature and finally, Best Director. The Iranian filmmaker, who was just sentenced to one year in prison in absentia for engaging in “propaganda activities,” was there to accept all three in person, delivering his remarks behind dark glasses, via an interpreter.

Panahi filmed his critically praised, Palme d’Or-winning drama in secret in Iran, and expressed his gratitude to everyone who risked their safety by helping him make it: “This award belongs to all people who worked for me on this film.” He also paid tribute to independent filmmakers who are not free to express themselves. (“It Was Just an Accident” is France’s Oscars submission for international feature; Panahi is currently a resident of that country.)

An early sign that the 35th Gothams might not be a “One Battle” victory march came when Harry Lighton’s “Pillion” beat Anderson for Best Adapted Screenplay. A bit later, Chase Infiniti lost Breakthrough Performer to Abou Sangaré from “Souleymane’s Story.” Then, Wunmi Mosaku from “Sinners” prevailed in the supporting performance category over Benicio del Toro and Teyana Taylor (who surely suffered from some vote-splitting. Stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn were not nominated.) Anderson’s win marked his first Gotham Award and fourth career nomination.

This year, the Best Feature category expanded from five to 10 nominees for the first time, which opened up slots for “Bugonia,” “East of Wall,” “Familiar Touch,” “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” “Lurker,” “Sorry, Baby,” “The Testament of Ann Lee,” “Train Dreams” and presumed Oscar frontrunners “One Battle” and “Hamnet.”

In the first 21 years of the Gotham Awards’ Best Feature category, its winner went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture only six times, beginning with “The Hurt Locker” in 2009 and also including “Birdman,” “Spotlight,” “Moonlight,” “Nomadland” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The Gotham winner was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar 13 times in that stretch — not including last year, the Gothams’ Best Feature winner, “A Different Man,” was bypassed by the Academy. The only 2024 Gothams winner to repeat at the Oscars was the documentary “No Other Land.”

In addition to the competitive awards, Monday’s show also recognized a slew of previously announced honorees: Guillermo del Toro, Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac for “Frankenstein” (Vanguard Tribute); Scott Cooper and Jeremy Allen White for “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” (Cultural Icon Award); Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman for “Song Sung Blue” (Musical Tribute); Tessa Thompson for “Hedda” (Spotlight Tribute); “Jay Kelly” director Noah Baumbach (Gotham Director Tribute); the cast of “Sinners” (Ensemble Tribute) and Julia Roberts and Luca Guadagnino for “After the Hunt” (Visionary Tribute).
