Pope supports same-sex civil unions

Pope Francis believes that for the legal protection of homosexuals it is necessary to create a law on civil unions. He stated this in a documentary film by American director Yevgeny Afineevsky about the pontiff. The film premiered at the Rome Film Festival on Wednesday 21 October.

“We need a law on civil unions, so homosexuals would receive legal protection. I am in favor of this, ”the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera quotes the pontiff. “Homosexuals are children of God. They have the right to a family, ”Pope Francis said.

The Pope has already explained that “there should be no equality between a family created by the will of God and any other type of union.” In 2016, he said that “marriage between a man and a woman” must be distinguished from other unions.

Earlier, Pope Francis urged not to condemn priests for homosexuality, he also turned to the church with a proposal to ask forgiveness from gays. The pontiff has long advocated a softer attitude of society towards homosexuals.
