40 in 40: 2019
Previewing the Mariners’ 40-man roster in 2019
It feels like just yesterday we were sitting down at the Thanksgiving table and yet here we are, just over a month away from pitchers and catchers reporting on February 11th. This year, as in past years, we will be previewing the Mariners’ 40-man roster with a series of brief profiles that we hope will serve as a resource to you for Spring Training (or as it’s also known, who’s that guy?) and beyond. At the time of this writing, the first week of January, the 40-man roster isn’t full, and Edwin Encarnación is still a Mariner, so we will adjust the series to reflect upcoming roster shuffles. After an off-season of heavy trading, the 2019 Mariners will look drastically different from the 2018 team. It is our humble hope that this year, in particular, the 40 in 40 series will help you pick out some new favorites among the sea of new faces donning the teal this season, or perhaps re-introduce some old friends in a new light. At the very least, the titles of some of these will serve as preternaturally perceptive (Zach’s profile of Edwin Díaz: “Can Sugar bounce back and become everything we thought he’d be?”), hilariously incorrect (John’s profile of Kyle Seager: “The Mariners’ steady hand will adjust, again”), or presciently sad (Isabelle’s “Gracias, Nelson Cruz”). Lay your bets now on which of these profiles will acquire the otherworldly glow of righteousness, and which will lay blackened and abandoned on the side of the road as 2019 speeds ever-further into the future.
