Black Friday inferno scarred landscape and communities

It seemed an eternity since the southeastern part of Australia had a decent rainfall. Technically the region had been in drought for several years. By the time summer rolled around in December 1938 much of Victoria was tinder dry, creeks had stopped flowing and paddocks were parched brown. Several serious fires broke out around the state and people feared the worst was yet to come.
