Atiku’s northeast campaign DG confirms his defection to APC, gives reason

- Senator Saidu Umar Kumo has confirmed his defection from the PDP to the APC

- Senator Kumo who was reportedly Atiku’s northeast campaign DG said he defected because the PDP was sidelining from the scheme of things ahead of the 2019 elections

- Kumo said he will soon pick his APC membership card to prove that he means business

The northeast director general of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential campaign council, Senator Saidu Umar Kumo, has confirmed his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nigerian Tribune reports that Senator Kumo who was a stalwart of the PDP in the region and a staunch supporter of the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, confirmed his defection in a telephone interview with newsmen in Gombe on Tuesday, January 15.

Legit.ng gathers that Senator Kumo who is a well-known critic of President Muhammadu Buhari said that the PDP wanted to rubbish his political career by trying to make him irrelevant in the scheme of things related to the 2019 general elections.

He vowed that with his defection to the APC will mar the fortunes of the PDP and its candidates in the forthcoming elections.

He said: “You don’t joke with a political power horse who has thousands of followers and who had added value to the party by trying to make him irrelevant in the build-up to the general elections.”

Senator Kumo said that he will soon pick his membership card of the APC in his ward in Akko local government area to prove that he means business.

He pledged his loyalty to the APC, adding that the ruling party is the better party to serve Nigeria well while President Muhammadu Buhari remains the best candidate following his track records of integrity and his sincere desire to take Nigeria to the next level.

“I want to assure you and all Nigerians that I will work for APC candidates in Gombe state from the governorship candidate, Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya and state legislative candidates, President Muhammadu Buhari, who stands as the best candidate for Nigeria for now and all the APC National Assembly candidates in Gombe state," he said.

Meanwhile, Bashir Ahmad, the personal assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on new media, had earlier announced Senator Kumo's defection from the PDP to the APC via Twitter.

His defection came on the heels of the defection of a former youth leader of the PDP in Nuku- Sabon Gari ward of Abaji Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Peter Yandu, and 157 other members to the APC.
