China has rejected claims from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the death penalty for a Canadian charged with drug smuggling has been 'arbitrarily' applied. The Chinese foreign ministry has warned Mr Trudeau to 'stop making such irresponsible remarks,' accusing Canada of 'double standards'. A Chinese court increased Robert Schellenberg's sentence to the death penalty, claiming the initial sentence of 15 years was too lenient. The 36-year-old was arrested in 2014 for allegedly attempting to smuggle 222 kilograms of methamphetamine from China to Australia.
