Nigeria Customs seize 29 vehicles, goods worth N1.1bn at Seme border

The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Command, says it intercepted 29 vehicles and goods worth about N1.1 billion in December, 2018.

The Customs Area Controller, Seme Command, Mohammed Garba, made this known on Tuesday, January 15, while briefing journalists on the activities of the command at the ECOWAS Joint Border Post in Seme.

According to him, the items seized were 29 vehicles with duty paid value of N177 million and 6,753 bags of 50kg foreign rice, equivalent to 11 trailer trucks worth N157 million.

“Other items include vegetable oil worth N573,750; sugar worth N567,000 and 71 kegs of petroleum worth N106, 500.

“It also include tin tomatoes worth N127,575; used shoes worth N67, 500 and 91 parcels of hard drug.

“The suspect of the hard drug, Kenneth Cornelius, has been prosecuted successfully and now serving jail term of two years,’’ Garba said.

He said that the command generated the sum of N623 million, representing 92 per cent of the target for December.

This, he said, was as a result of the unwavering resolve of the officers of the command in various operations.

“This focussed on maximising revenue collection, suppression of smuggling and facilitation of legitimate trade in the final month of the year.

“Similarly, the intensified operation of the enforcement unit has drastically reduced smuggling activities to the barest minimum,’’ Garba said.

The controller said that with the inauguration and subsequent movement of the command to the Joint Border Post (JBP) of Seme-Krake, the operations of the command would be further enhanced through cooperation, collaboration and regional integration.

He said that it would facilitate the free movement of people and services.

Garba said that the command would further strengthen its anti-smuggling operations against the trans-border crimes through intelligence-driven operations and continuous partnership with relevant agencies.

Legit.ng previously reported that the Seme border command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Wednesday, November 21, said it seized contraband worth over N2.8 billion which included 27 trailers load of foreign parboiled rice smuggled into the country through neighbouring Benin Republic.

Speaking while displaying the seized items to journalists, the customs area controller of the command, Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba, said the command also seized 21 exotic vehicles worth N135 million between September and November 2018.

Garuba said among the items seized were; 21 vehicles, worth N134,410,536; 16,729 bags (27 trailers) of foreign rice worth N302,477,049, frozen poultry products worth N728,654,and vegetable oil worth N400,440.
