- Jonathan, however, said that stable government cannot be achieved without free and fair elections

- The former president, therefore, recommended four strategies to ensure free and fair elections

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has recommended some strategies which he said will guarantee free and fair elections in Nigeria and the African continent as a whole.

In his new book, My Transition Hours, the former president said he is dedicating his post-presidency life to working on how Nigeria/Africa can secure stable governance by encouraging a healthy polity.

“I want to contribute my quota to securing a stable government for the people by encouraging a healthy polity. What promotes a healthy economy is a stable political system. The challenge facing both growing and established democracies is to ensure that elections be expressed in a democratic spirit, and backed up by strong institutions that can develop and sustain electoral integrity,” he said.

Jonathan said that to have a stable government and stable political system that will lead to desired economic development, Nigeria/Africa needs to put in place mechanisms that will guarantee free and fair elections. He, therefore, recommended four strategies to ensure Nigeria’s elections are free and fair.

He wrote: “I am fully persuaded that we need free and fair elections. So what can we do to guarantee we achieve this? We must continue to nurture the democratic spirit and as I travel around the continent, I will continue to advocate that each nation state looks at their action plan by identifying and eliminating challenges facing them such as:

• Nation-First thinking as opposed to Me and My Tribe Against My Nation.

• Making the Office of the President Less Attractive and the Office of the Citizen More Powerful.

• Granting Financial Autonomy to Electoral Commissions And;

• A Strong Independent Ombudsman to Investigate and Punish Incidences of Electoral Crimes.
