He said: "This is my 20th year as a professional and it has been 20 years since I signed my first contract so it feels like the time is right.

Cech is one of the best goalkeepers to have played in the English topflight after keeping 202 Premier League clean sheets.

One of his most memorable moments was when he saved penalties from Ivica Olic, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben in the Munich final to land the Blues their first, and to date only, European Cup success.

Legit.ng earlier reported that African legends Didier Drogba and Mikel Obi sent a heartfelt message to their former teammate Petr Cech after he announced his retirement from football at the end of the season.

The ex-Czech international officially made it public he will be hanging his gloves at the end of the current season after 15 years in the Premier League.

The 36-year-old who won many trophies with Drogba and Mikel during their spell at Stamford Bridge was showered with accolades by the two west African stars on their respective Instagram handles.
