Pelosi Brings Down The Gavel, Punishes Dem Who Opposed Her Speakership Bid
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), comfortable after a fight to win back the position, is punishing one of her detractors by passing her over for a coveted spot on the House Judiciary Committee.
According to a Tuesday Politico report, Pelosi supported freshmen candidates over Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY) despite a united front from the New York delegation, seen as a signal that Pelosi has not forgotten how vocal Rice was in opposing her reelection.
Pelosi argued that New Yorkers were already well represented on the panel, but Rice’s supporters countered that Florida has just as many members in the committee.
Despite the New Yorkers’ anger, the Steering Committee put Pelosi’s list of selections to a secret up or down vote, and the speaker triumphed.
Rep. Lou Correa (CA) and freshmen Reps. Mary Gay Scanlon (PA), Madeleine Dean (PA), Veronica Escobar (TX), Sylvia Garcia (TX), Lucy McBath (GA), Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL), Joe Neguse (CO) and Greg Stanton (AZ) will join the committee.
