The 2020 presidential election: announcements, news, and updates
President Trump will likely face a slew of Democrats vying to challenge him.
The 2020 presidential race has already begun. While the first primary contests are still a year away, Democrats have started announcing their intent to challenge President Donald Trump or form a “presidential exploratory committee.” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard have joined the race, with potential contenders Sens. Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Sherrod Brown, and Cory Booker rumored to follow. Spurred by Trump’s unpopularity and the lack of a clear frontrunner, as many as 34 Democrats are reportedly considering a run, including veterans like Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
No Republican has committed to challenging Trump in the primary — yet. While the president remains unpopular with the general electorate, his approval rating among Republicans hovers between 80 and 90 percent, according to polling. But that hasn’t stopped speculation that former Sen. Jeff Flake or Sen. Mitt Romney, who have both been openly critical of the president (at times), might join the race.
