After Amanda Nunes knocked out Cris Cyborg to become the first ever female double champion in the UFC, talk quickly turned to what would be next for Nunes. Cyborg, obviously, argued for an immediate rematch, given her tenure as champion, but UFC President Dana White wasn’t all that interested in doing that, and it looks like, as usual, White will get what he wants.

On Twitter on Wednesday, Nunes told Cyborg that she would not be competing at featherweight again and that the former champion should try and build 145 with two-time Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison. To Cyborg’s immense credit, she took the news in stride, saying that she would be more than happy to fight Harrison, and wouldn’t even make the judoka cut weight if she didn’t want to.

As for Nunes, she has a couple of ideas in mind for what’s next, including defending her bantamweight title in the fight that arguably makes the most sense for her, against former bantamweight champion and featherweight challenger Holly Holm.

Holm has not had a sterling record of late, having only won two of her last six, but there are few names bigger than her in the bantamweight division and she remains one of the few established 135ers that Nunes hasn’t fought. But unfortunately for Holm, that bout may have to wait, as the champ champ also suggested that she was seriously interested in facing her old nemesis, Valentina Shevchenko, one final time to chase a third belt by dropping down to Shevchenko’s division.

Shevchenko won the flyweight title at UFC 231 but has a history with Nunes, squaring off twice before with the champ champ and coming up on the wrong end of controversial decisions both times. A third contest would give Nunes the opportunity to become the first ever triple champion in UFC history, and while that is clearly enticing for her, Nunes finished her late-night Tweetstorm by hinting that anything is on the table, assuming the price is right.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Not sure how Amanda plans on winning a third belt when she’s already lost to Shevchenko twice, but you know the old adage: if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again under more difficult circumstances. Also, it is honestly impressive how the UFC has cratered the value of their belts over the last two years. It’s like they looked at boxing and thought, ‘how can we replicate the single worst aspect of it?’

Speaking of boxing, I still maintain that Floyd Sr. would’ve beaten Conor.
