Report: Daniel Jacobs to make as much as $15M for Canelo fight

Daniel Jacobs is set for what is by far a career high payday for his May 4th matchup with Canelo Alvarez.

Last week it was officially announced that WBA and WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (51-1-2, 35 KOs) would fight IBF champion Daniel Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) in a huge unification bout on May 4th. Jacobs recently signed a new three-fight contract with Matchroom USA, and the first bout on that deal is no doubt very lucrative.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Jacobs is in line for his first ever eight-figure payday, and even if he falls short against Canelo, his two fights after that will be both bring in considerable purses.

Sources familiar with the deal have indicated that Jacobs stands to collect as much as $15 million for the Alvarez fight, and a minimum of $4 million in his next two fights should he lose to Alvarez.

“If [Jacobs] wins or gets a draw, it’s big, big money for those next fights,” one individual familiar with the deal but unauthorized to comment publicly on it told The Times.

For reference, Jacobs’ last purse was in the neighborhood of $1.6 million for his IBF title win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko on HBO in October. In his lone PPV main event appearance against Gennady Golovkin, his official purse was $1.75 million before factoring in any PPV cut. That event generated 170,000 PPV buys.

This will be Jacobs’ debut on the streaming service DAZN, which is home to Matchroom USA fighters. Alvarez is signed directly to DAZN on an 11-fight, $365 million deal, with the remaining ten fights worth at least $350 million. So if Jacobs does reach the maximum $15 million, then this fight will likely see the two men earn at least $50 million combined. DAZN is lined with deep pockets, and this was one of the biggest possible fights to make, and now Jacobs is set for considerable financial gain this year.
