Stocks end mostly lower as investors await outcome of Fed meeting

U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Tuesday, led by the Nasdaq, as traders awaited the results of the Federal Reserve's two-day meeting which got under way in the morning. The S&P 500 fell 0.1% to finish near 2,640. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 52 points, or 0.2%, to end around 24,580, based on preliminary numbers. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.8% to finish around 7,028. The central bank's meeting is set to conclude on Wednesday, with investors hoping that the Fed may clarify its hiking intentions and plans for its $4 trillion asset portfolio. U.S.-China trade tensions also drew attention after the Department of Justice unveiled criminal charges against Huawei Technologies for allegedly violating Iranian sanctions and stealing trade secrets. In company news, shares for 3M Co. rose 1.9% after fourth-quarter results were better than expected.
