Full coverage: Tacoma’s Wednesday presser
The Rainiers and Sounders are joining forces and changing the face of Tacoma’s sports scene.
The details of Wednesday’s announcement are still secret, but there are a few assumptions as to what the Tacoma Rainiers and Seattle Sounders will be announcing. S2 will have a new name and identity, one that points to Tacoma as the home of the Sounders’ USL Championship squad, the top of their developmental organization.
Part of the “series of announcements” is also expected to related to the Heidelberg/Davis Stadium project. The land nestled between Foss High School, Cheney Stadium and 19th Street/Fred Meyer will likely be the future home of S2-be-named. Populous is the architect and design firm. They’ve worked on 105 stadiums globally, including one of the 15 soccer-specific stadia in North America that are not shared with an MLS team. There are 36 teams in the USL Championship for 2019, with nine of them having some level of MLS ownership.
There is likely more to the announcement, which will be streamed.
