On 23 January, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido proclaimed himself the country's interim president, in a move that was backed by the United States and a number of other countries. Russia, China, Mexico, Iran, Turkey and several other states expressed support for democratically elected Nicolas Maduro as Venezuela's only president.
