Just in: Buratai meets GOCs, field commanders, others few days to presidential election

Emerging reports have claimed that the Chief Of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai, on Monday, February 4, met top officers at the Nigerian Army headquarters command officers mess, Asokoro, Abuja.

Daily Sun reports that the meeting had all the General Officers Commanding (GOCs), field commanders and principal staff officers among others senior officers in attendance.

Legit.ng gathered that the meeting was aimed at reviewing the progress and shortfalls of various army operations across the country.

There was also a prediction that it would deliberate extensively on the role expected by soldiers in the forthcoming general elections.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army, flagged off Operation Python Dance (EGWU EKE ) III in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the Guards Brigade Step-up Headquarters Kuje, Abuja, the minister of FCT, Muhammed Musa Bello, said the essence of the exercise is to secure FCT and it's environs against all forms of crime and to create a conducive atmosphere for the conduct the 2019 general elections.

The minister while noting that security challenges has been on the increase since the arrival of the elections, however expressed confidence in the operation to guarantee a peaceful environment for the elections.

In a related development, the Army vowed not to tolerate undue interference by politicians in the conduct of its ongoing Exercise Egwu Eke III.

Brigadier General Sani Usman, the army spokesman, gave the warning in a statement on Sunday, February 3, after troops arrested 16 suspected political thugs in Sokoto state. Egwu Eke III or Python Dance was launched nationwide on Wednesday, January, 2 to deal with criminal activities before, during and after the general elections.

It will be rounded off in March after the general elections. Usman said the suspects were arrested armed with 27 axes and 16 customised sticks.

He said they were arrested on Saturday, January 2, during joint stop and search patrol with other security agencies along Illela-Danfulani-Gwadabawa road.

The army spokesman, however, disclosed that a prominent politician in the state and a serving Senator, whose name he did not mention, came to the scene and ordered his mobile police escorts to release them.
