Removing a derailleur hanger?

I've got a couple of old rear derailleurs that have the hanger or "claw" attached. I've asked several people about the viability of removing the claw so that the derailleur can be directly mounted to a bike frame.

What's the verdict, does it work this way, or is the mounting bolt different on...
