Cliff Myers RIP 8th February 2019 (1946 - 2019)
8 February 2019 : Cliff Myers RIP : 1946-2019
Former Yeovil Town midfielder Cliff Myers has passed away at the age of 72. Cliff was a former Charlton Athletic, Brentford and Torquay United player who became a popular figure during his time at Huish, as part of the highly successful side that dominated the Southern League during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Born in Southwark on September 23rd 1946, he was a Charlton youth product who played 18 times for them between 1965 and 1967 before moving across London to play for for Brentford for a season, making 10 league appearances. In January 1968, Myers was recruited by manager Ron Saunders as a 21 year old winger, with Yeovil paying a fee for his services. Saunders had arrived from Charlton himself and so knew Myers as a teammate, with Paul Smith also having come in from the same club as a close friend of his. Yeovil paid a fee for his services, which at that time was a rarity.
Cliff was to spend five-and-a-half seasons at Yeovil Town, and be part of the famous 1970-71 side that won the Southern League, and also reached the Third Round of the FA Cup. He was to ultimately move into a deeper role for the Glovers, eventually becoming a central defender. One of his finest moments for the club came during the 1972-73 season when in November 1972, he scored the winning goal in the First Round of the FA Cup against his old side Brentford, in front of 9,447 spectators.
