Oscars through the decades: Look back at the Academy Awards in 1999, 1989, 1979...

The Academy has certainly tried to evolve over the years, although its latest attempts were a bit short-sighted: This year alone, the Oscars introduced (and then un-introduced) a new category, yanked major categories off the air (and then put them back on), and cut live musical performances (and then added them back in).
