Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has asked the Auditor-General to investigate Georgina Downer. The Liberal candidate for Mayo posted a photo to Facebook on Friday showing her handing out a cheque for more than $125,000 to a local bowling club. Ms Downer came under fire for the stunt because the cheque was a government grant, not a personal donation. Trade Minister Simon Birmingham has defended the Liberal candidate, telling Sky News ‘that type of promotional activity is what members and candidates do right across the country all the time, to help raise awareness for the fact that they’re working for their local community’.
