By ending its contract with behemoth Elsevier, UC has established itself as a leader in academia’s push for open access publishing. But it will trigger a major change in how researchers conduct their work. Everyone in the UC system — 21,200 faculty and 251,700 students — could face tighter and less convenient access to new research findings.
