Gun-heavy show Oklahoma! will donate to gun control initiative to offset presence of firearms

Broadway's upcoming revival of the musical Oklahoma! will make a $10,000 donation to a nonprofit trying to reduce gun violence, reports Axios.

The production, which begins performances in March, is the first Broadway show to help counteract the effect of fictional depictions of gun violence. Playbill previously reported that the production would make a donation to a nonprofit aiming to end gun violence for every gun visibly seen during the show. The show features more than 100 guns, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The National Rifle Association previously labelled the production's intent to donate as an effort "to pander to anti-gun extremists."

The attempt to mitigate depictions of gun violence is similar to carbon neutrality efforts, which have seen companies try to offset their own greenhouse gas emissions through financial contributions, per Axios.
