[Golf] Golf faces tough weather on home course

Fletcher, N.C. – The Montreat College men's and women's golf teams continued their spring schedule this week as they hosted the Cavalier Spring Invitational at Broadmoor Golf Links in Fletcher on Monday and Tuesday. In a field made up mostly of NAIA teams, the players battled bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills that fell well below freezing for the two days.

Leading the field on the first day for the women was Sydney Fairchild whose round of 80 was five strokes ahead of the nearest competitor. Sara Gwillim and Savannah Kummelman both posted scores of 87. Rounding out the scores for the ladies was Bridgette Smith (91) and Emma Robert's (98). The Lady Cavs found themselves in second place at the halfway point, just one stroke back of Tennessee Wesleyan.

The weather on day two was slightly better. However, the ladies were not able to make up any ground, maintaining their position in solo second place. Whitney Kincaid was the low score for the ladies on day two with an 85.

On the men's side, Jacob Shamblin led the way with a second round 78, which put him at T-8th out of a 37 player field. The men finished third overall, just behind University of the Cumberlands and Brewton-Parker. Austin Fisher of Brevard College won the event with scores of 73-71 to finish at even par.

"We just can't seem to catch a break with the weather so far this spring," said head coach John Sullivan. "You kind of have to lower your expectations somewhat in conditions like this, but we won't let this discourage us. There are a lot of positives to take away from this week regardless of the scores."

Up Next: The men hit the road next week for the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, hosted by Tennessee Tech University at Sevierville Golf Club March 17th-19th.
