[Softball] Softball falls twice to Houston-Victoria

VICTORIA, Texas – The Kansas Wesleyan softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Monday to the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars, 10-0 and 8-0, at the Victoria Youth Complex. UHV is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll.

UHV (13-3) came away with a 10-0 win in the opener over the Coyotes (7-7).

Tara Stubits (SO/Topeka, Kan.) singled in the first inning for the Coyotes, but was unable to score.

Wesleyan put two runners on in the second as Kirsten Redfern (FR/Keller, Texas) led off with a single and three batters later, Taylor LaGrange (SR/Mont Belvieu, Texas) also singled, but both runners would again be stranded on base.

Houston-Victoria scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning and added two more in the third and fourth innings to come away with the run-rule win.

Stubits, Redfern and LaGrange had hits for the Coyotes in the game. Stubits went three innings in the circle, allowing eight runs (five earned), on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.  Valaree Reyes (SO/Round Rock, Texas) saw her first action in the circle on the season, tossing an inning, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.

The Coyote bats were held in check again in the second game as KWU only had three hits in the 8-0 loss.

Just like in the opener, Stubits reached on a hit with two outs in the first but was again stranded on base.

UHV scored runs in the first and second innings, and added two in the second and three in the fourth before scoring the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth.

Anna Grace Williams (FR/Crandall, Texas), Stubits and Redfern had hits for the Coyotes in the game. Williams went the distance in the circle allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts in four and a third innings.

KWU continues its visit to Texas on Wednesday, taking on the Huston-Tillotson Rams at 1 p.m. in Austin.
