Opera review: The Merry Widow at the English National Opera

When Franz Lehar's operetta The Merry Widow was first produced in Vienna in 1905, it was an immediate sensation. The critics, as befits their title, were rather critical, but the public loved its irreverence and its tuneful schmaltzy music and it remained popular throughout the 20th century.
