Born in Ballarat in Victoria in 1941, George Pell made a remarkable ascent through the ranks of the clergy. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1996 and went on to become a founding member of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996 and was made Archbishop of Sydney five years later in 2001. In 2014 George Pell ascended to the rank of Cardinal and took on the role as Treasury of the Vatican and the Holy City of Rome, putting him third in charge after the Pope. It has been announced on Tuesday that Cardinal George Pell has been found guilty of five counts of historical child sexual assault.
