From 50/34 to 50/36
I have a 2014 Cannondale SuperSix Evo Ultegra Di2 (Shimano Ultegra 6700 components). It came with both 53/39 and 50/34 chainrings. While this may make me a "weaker" rider, I prefer the compact setup with a 50/34 chainring (turns out, I am self aware and am a weaker rider).
I was recently talking to some cyclist types that seem to know than me about this sort of thing, and one suggested I look into a 50/36, citing an "easier" shift between the front chainrings. He offered to let me try out a 50/36 he has. I was wondering if this was as simple as removing my 50/34 and putting his 50/36 on, or if this required other adjustments (chain length, derailleur adjustment /alignment, etc.). My bicycle knowledge is very basic - I pedal to move forward with some eye towards cadence, heart rate, and resulting speed, with a tangential awareness of power. I don't tune-up the bicycle myself or perform much maintenance beyond changing flats and mounting lights.
I was also wondering what others thought about the change. Will I notice the difference?
Thanks in advance for the input. I have started only one other thread (related to FTP and other power / cadence issues), and everyone was extremely helpful. I generally can find most my questions answers through search. This forum has been a great resource.
