How long until Brexit changes come into force?

0

CHAOS continues to plague Britain’s departure from the EU, with even our departure date no longer a certainty.

Here’s the low-down on when the UK could leave the bloc, and what’s due to happen when we do.

When’s Brexit actually happening?

The short answer is that nobody really knows.

As most of us are aware (whether we like it or not), Britain was due to leave the EU on March 29, 2019 – exactly two years after the process was legally triggered by Article 50.

However, Parliament’s inability to agree on a deal among themselves means it looks like we may be staying in the union a while longer.

Weeks before the planned departure, MPs voted in favour of extending Article 50 so they can try to thrash out another deal.

However, it will be up to Theresa May to put it to EU leaders, with all 27 member states having to agree on the extension for it to take effect.

If they DID agree, there would also be a matter of how long the extension would actually be.

May’s motion proposed a delay of Article 50 until June 30, 2019 – so one of three months.

European Commission President Donald Tusk has said he will appeal to the EU27 to be open to a “long extension” of this length.

But a “technical” extension of just a few weeks might also be possible if MPs voted for Mrs May’s “meaningful vote” when she tries to push it through a third time round with just a week or so to go before Brexit.

What will happen after Brexit?

A transition period running until December 2020 (and possibly longer, if our departure is also extended) kicks in after a withdrawal agreement is agreed and aims to help the UK work out its future relationship with Europe.

Current trading requirements would continue, and the UK would have to abide by EU rules during this time, though they won’t be able to contribute.

UK citizens currently in the EU and EU citizens in the UK have been assured they can carry on living in their respective countries with the same rights enshrined to them.

But our exact relationship with the bloc will depend dramatically on what kind of deal we manage to salvage from Brussels.

The transition period only comes into effect if a withdrawal deal is agreed on.

Under a No Deal or “cliff-edge” Brexit, the new trading and regulatory rules would come into play overnight, with no ironing-out period at all.
