‘I Am a Racist’: Brenton Tarrant ID’d as Accused New Zealand Mosque Shooter, U.S. Source Says
The man in custody for a terrorist attack on New Zealand mosques has been identified as 28-year-old Australian citizen Brenton Harrison Tarrant—who declared “I am a racist” in an online manifesto—according to a U.S. law enforcement source briefed on the New Zealand investigation.
Tarrant did not have a criminal record before he allegedly opened fire inside two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, during Friday prayers, according to the source.
Authorities say 49 people are dead and more than 20 people, including children, were injured in the rampage, part of which Tarrant apparently live-streamed on his Facebook page. He was apprehended in a car in southern Christchurch, according to witnesses. His car had been rigged with explosives which police dismantled.
