From ‘elf’ ears to tongue tentacles… people show off the body quirks that make them unique

THE human body is a mysterious thing.

From hiccups to goosebumps, we all experience different body quirks from time to time.

This person has ulnar dimelia, also known as ‘mirror hand syndrome’, which means there’s no thumb and seven or eight fingers on each hand

But for some of us, these traits are more unusual than others – and people are certainly proud of it.

This image gallery, complied by Bored Panda, reveals some of the most unique cases from around the world.

They include a baby born with naturally pointed “elf shaped” ears and a man with “mirror hand syndrome” meaning he has no thumb.

Others include someone with “tentacles” hanging from the underside of their tongue and another person who can bend their hand completely backwards.

MIRROR HANDS

‘Mirror hand syndrome’ is so rare that less than 100 cases have been reported in medical literature

ELF EARS

This youngster was born with ears like Spock from Star Trek, known in medicine as Stahl’s ear. The deformity is a result of a misshapen cartilage which can often be moulded in the first week of the infant’s life

BACKWARD HANDS

This person is so ‘double jointed’, also known as hyper-mobility, they are able to grab things backwards

ONE FINGER, ONE THUMB

Born with Amniotic Band Syndrome, this person claimed they used to wrestle and since it was required that opponents shake hands before the first period, it was a great way to throw people off

TENTACLE TONGUE

This person has what is known as plica frimbriata, which occur when the folds that go alongside the frenulum (the tissue that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth) have small growths or skin tags on them

DOUBLE COWLICK

This little lad has symmetrical hair whorls, which grow in opposite directions – and he can even grow a natural mohawk

WRINKLY HANDS

Pruney fingers happen when the nervous system sends a message to the blood vessels to become narrower but scientists are unsure why

TOE-ING THE LINE

This person was born with six toes on one foot (hexadactyly) while their colleague was born with four toes on her right foot

HALF MEASURE

This guy has Waardenburg syndrome, which means he is deaf in one ear and his hair colour is white in places, plus his eyes are different colours

RULE OF THUMB

This man inherited a thumb from each of his parents

MISSING LINK

This person was born without a bridge in his nose (depressed nasal bridge) and shows how he can squash it completely flat

BIG LITTLE FINGER

Macrodactyly is a rare condition that causes an individual to have one or more fingers or toes that are much larger than the others. The exact cause is unknown but some believe is comes from an abnormal nerve or blood supply

TALE OF TWO HALVES

This guy only has freckles on one half of his face – it’s actually due to a mutation in the pigment cells

SEEING EYE TO EYE

This persons iris colour is split in half, also known as heterochromia iridis, a genetic mutation caused by an excess or lack of melanin

WEBBED TOES

These sisters have had some clever tattoos to mark their webbed toes, scientifically known as syndactyly

KNUCKLE DOWN

This woman was born with a condition that leaves her unable to bend her right thumb, also known as trigger finger – it’s where the tendon is too swollen or locks

GOT IT FROM MY FATHER

This woman was born with an index finger shorter than her pinky finger – after her dad lost the top off his when he was 10
