Group of young pequistes questions PQ's viability in open letter

About 30 young members of the Parti Québécois have publicly stated that the rift between their party and Quebec has become too wide to be bridged, particularly when it comes to the province’s young people.

In an open letter sent to La Presse, the signatories contend that despite the contributions made by the PQ to Quebec’s progress, more and more people are feeling the that future does not lie with the party.

They argue further that the PQ is no longer capable of rallying the strength necessary to achieve independence.

The letter was initiated by Melissa Nilsson, who up until recently was vice-president of the PQ’s national youth committee.

It also constitutes an apparent expression of support for Catherine Fournier, the MNA for Marie-Victorin who left the PQ last Monday, preferring to sit in the National Assembly as a sovereignist independent.

The authors of the letter hope to convince their fellow party members of the necessity of creating new themes with which to create a real union of sovereignists in Quebec.

This latest questioning of the PQ’s viability comes as the party prepares to meet next weekend in Trois-Rivières.
