Re: “What’s next for students in middle of cheating scandal?” (Page A1, March 14):

Here are four reasons the students themselves should not be protected from the fact that their parents got caught cheating:

1. It’s hard to believe that the under-qualified students are innocently ignorant of the parent’s intervention. Although they may be pleased and excited to be accepted by the college of their dreams, surely they must wonder how they got in while their smarter classmates did not.

2. Leaving them in means that cheating worked. Slapping a rich parent with a fine is nothing, and the concept of shame no longer exists, supplanted by the notion of “beating the system.”

3. Unless it’s a school that “caters” to the privileged, an under-qualified kid will have to compete with smart kids and may not be able to get the grades needed to stay and graduate.
