Why do we have an international break in March?

I'm not as anti international football as many on here. I love not just the big tournaments but actually also enjoy the qualifying aspect of it and following smaller teams who may or may not make the tournament e.g. Venezuela, Iceland, Panama from recent times.

However I've always thought it bonkers they have an international break at this time of the year.
