UFC on ESPN+ 6 play-by-play and live results

NASHVILLE – MMA Junkie is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC on ESPN+ 6 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., and streams on ESPN+.

In the main event, two-time welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson (14-3-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) takes on former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (21-8 MMA, 8-7 UFC), who is moving up to 170 pounds for the first time.

Randa Markos vs. Angela Hill

Round 1 – Early kicks traded with Hill finding success high and mid. They collide 30 seconds in and clinch up, with Hill turning Markos against the fence. Knees traded, and Markos sneaks in an elbow. They trade punches, and Markos chases Hill across the cage with punches and then transitions to the clinch for a takedown. In side control, she stays heavy as Hill tries to buck. Markos steps into quarter mount, and then pistons her left as Hill turns away, stuck against the cage. Hill rolls to her knees, and Markos keeps a hook. As Hill turns toward her stomach again, Markos again steps over to mount and punches again before fully taking the back. Markos attacks an armbar, and Hill tries to power to her hands and knees. Gravity helping Markos briefly, but Hill hanging tough. Markos keeps cranking, though, and eventually Hill’s arm pops free. She’s forced to tap, and Markos gets the submission win.

Ryan MacDonald vs. Chris Gutierrez

Round 1 -Gutierrez attacks the legs early, spinning MacDonald before attempting high. Second high attempt slaps MacDonald, who stumbles trying to come back with his own shot. MacDonald’s legs are getting torn up early. He’s trying to get inside with punches, and Gutierrez’s kicks are making it tough. More teeps to the leg and body from Gutierrez. Wheel kick whiffs for Gutierrez, who goes to the body on the next punch. MacDonald charges back and tries his own punch combos, which are short. Gutierrez goes to the body again with a punch. Gutierrez slowly cornering MacDonald, setting up for a big punch and keeping his foe off balance with kicks. Glancing straight from MacDonald, and Gutierrez tries a few kicks. Nie jabs from Gutierrez, who follows up to the body and whiffs on a wheel kick. They exchange punches briefly before breaking off, and MacDonald ends a combo with a nice leg kick. Gutierrez ends the frame with a spinning elbow that puts him in the clinch. MMA Junkie scores the frame 10-9 for Gutierrez.

Round 2 – MacDonald is bleeding from his forehead. Gutierrez gets going with low kicks and teeps, looking for an angle to punch. A leg kick hobbles MacDonald briefly, and body kick follows. MacDonald presses forward with punches and gets caught with a leg kick. Gutierrez very active with kicks, and it’s breaking MacDonald’s rhythm. He’s spending more time thinking about what’s coming his way than reacting. When he pushes forward, Gutierrez picks him apart with more kicks. MacDonald’s best hope is brute strength, which he tries with straight forward attacks. Gutierrez nails the leg again, and MacDonald is limping. Kick after kick from Gutierrez, and MacDonald is swimming. His leg is getting chopped up, and jabs are battering his face. Gutierrez back to the body with his straight. It’s all feints from Gutierrez, who sprawls on a shot and wraps the head. MacDonald goes to his back before popping up. This won’t be a ground fight. Another leg kick nails MacDonald. He catches a body kick and walks Gutierrez to the cage. He doesn’t have the strength to hold the clinch and dives again for a takedown after another kick nails him. Gutierrez to the body now as MacDonald hobbles back. Spin elbow from Gutierrez interrupted by final bell. MMA Junkie scores the frame 10-8 for Gutierrez, and he’s up 20-17.

Round 3 – MacDonald hobbles after getting clipped with another kick. MacDonald powers forward and tries to clinch, and no dice. Gutierrez still kicking low and to the midsection. MacDonald trying to run down his opponent. Without his leg strength, that’s tough. Gutierrez circling to the weak side and looking for the power right. Another charge from MacDonald, and another. Midway point. MacDonald now attacking the legs, and Gutierrez slaps him with a head kick before going low with a punch. Lunging knee as MacDonald approaches, and low kicks sting him. MacDonald presses in to the clinch, and Gutierrez breaks off. More leg kicks from Gutierrez, and MacDonald again charges. Gutierrez dodges and puts himself on his back as he tries a kick sweep. Triangle from the bottom, and MacDonald tries to put some ground and pound on his foe. Gutierrez scrambles up and jumps for a guillotine as time expires. MMA Junkie scores it 10-9 for Gutierrez, who takes the 30-26 decision.

Eric Shelton vs. Jordan Espinosa

Round 1 – Espinosa feinting early, and spins with a side kick. The takedown duck under comes next, and Shelton gets away taking a knee. Espinosa comes back with a right hand and resets. Another spin from Espinosa. Shelton hasn’t done much so far, but he cuts off the next approach of his opponent. Espinosa attacking the lead leg in return. Shelton wings a left hook as Espinosa comes close, and Espinosa smiles and waves him on. Shelton counters well with a right hook off the same from his foe. But he’s staying patient as Espinosa moves frenetically. Now, Shelton advancing and nearly cuts off Espinosa with a right. Espinosa using a jab as Shelton advances, then kicks, one of which goes south. We pause. Espinosa back to low kicks. Shelton fires a right, and Espinosa ducks under for the shot. Cage stops them, and Espinosa breaks with a knee. Shelton comes back and misses a hard overhand right. Espinosa just a little faster in the pocket, and even if his movement is often wasted, his volume is winning the day. Shelton hits a nice low kick, and we end with MMA Junkie scoring the round 10-9 or Espinosa.

Round 2 – Shelton comes back early on a low kick with his right hand. He’s moving forward and being more aggressive, pushing Espinosa back. Espinosa back to his low kick and jab. Shelton catches a kick to score with his right. Espinosa takes a glancing left hook as he kicks, and Shelton tries to shuffle into range. Espinosa fakes into a nice right hand for himself. Shelton still flat-footed most of the time, which is exposing him to low kicks. Shelton keeps trying that overhand right while Espinosa kicks low and circles off when it gets too hot. Shelton is still short trying to catch his man moving backward. But he manages to stick a right hand before Espinosa resets. Nice left from Espinosa as Shelton charges. Jab defusing Shelton’s approach. Shelton smacks him with a left as he gets a little too loose. Espinosa plants at the cage, daring Shelton to come in, then circles off when he obliges. Takedown comes after Shelton sits down on a shot. They scramble to their feet, and Shelton resumes his chase. He’s got Espinosa cornered, and a jab and kick pushes him back. Time and time again, Espinosa is escaping off the left side. Shelton flurries forward, and Espinosa goes the other direction. MMA Junkie scores the frame 10-9 for Espinosa, and he’s up 20-18.

Round 3 – Shelton back in pursuit, and the ref pauses the action. Towell used to scrub canvas, and we start anew. Espinosa jabbing as Shelton presses, and Shelton takes a finger to the eye off a kick. He singles to the ref, and we pause. Espinosa now moving forward and spins with a kick. Shelton presses him back with a jab and low kick. Shelton again whiffs on a charge. He takes the leg kick and then catches it on the next one to work his right hand. Shelton again meets Espinosa with the overhand. When Espinosa kicks, he goes again with the same. Espinosa goading him with lowered hands. Espinosa’s speed is getting him out of the way just in time as Shelton punches. Jab covers his retreat. Shelton with a nice calf kick. He needs something big here, and so far, none of his punches are getting Espinosa’s attention. Espinosa nails him with a jab, and his kick is caught for a Shelton counter. Espinosa takes a jab off his own and moves to the cage. Shelton’s time, and he catches the kick again to fire a right. Espinosa circles off as another forward attack follows. Shelton nails a jab, but he’s running out of time. Espinosa’s left hook is good, and Shelton replies with a nice right. Now, he’s going for blood, and Espinosa is fighting backward as they trade power punches in bunches. MMAjunkie scores the frame 10-9 for Shelton, but Espinosa gets the 29-28 call.
