SIMEON JACKSON had a night to forget for St Mirren after his scuffed Panenka penalty was saved – with St Johnstone netting the winner four minutes later.

Buddies boss Oran Kearney was left fuming with the Canadian international – with the defeat leaving his side rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.

A win for the visitors at McDiarmid Park would have lifted them above Dundee into 11th, and they were given the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock in the ninth minute.

But former Norwich striker Jackson – who has netted five goals this season – couldn’t add to his tally from the spot after his effort dribbled towards Saints goalkeeper Zander Clark.

The 32-year-old failed to get the right connection on his penalty, with the shot easily saved by the feet of Clark between the sticks.

To add insult to injury, Christopher Kane banged in the only goal of the game minutes later – with Kearney claiming the penalty miss “killed us”.

He added: “We spoke before the game about the magnitude of the games and the pressure to make good decisions.

“And I said it again to him in there as he’s a big enough boy to take it.

“If we’re 3-0 up in the first game of the season with 10 minutes to go and he tries something like that, you can accept it.

“But where we are and how the goal would have been for us, it’s crazy.”

Speaking on Radio Scotland, former Hearts defender Allan Preston said: “That’s the worst penalty I’ve seen live. It’s a disgrace.

“If they get relegated by a point, that’ll haunt them. It was absolutely crazy.”

Fans were equally fuming with the ex-Gillingham marksman, as one tweeted: “We’re bottom of the league. Why would you try and be cool?”

Another commented: “If you’re up by a couple then by all means be cute with that penalty, if you’re bottom of the league and need the points and it’s tied, don’t be cute.”

One simply stated: “Disregard for his club, fans, opposition and the league.”

While another posted: “St Mirren’s Simeon Jackson just tried a Panenka from the penalty spot and it barely got off the ground. Another clip to add to the Scottish Premiership’s end of season highlight reel.”

Another tweeted: “Simeon Jackson should have been taken straight off after that penalty. Professional football? Absolute embarrassment.”

St Mirren – who face fellow strugglers Dundee on the weekend – have won just four out of their 30 league games this season.
